Purinethol Information

Purinethol Details (Brand and Generic)

CanadaPharmacyOnline.com currently offers the brand Purinethol from Turkey, manufactured by GSK. The generic Mercaptopurine comes from Canada and India by different manufacturers. Our customers may also purchase other Cancer Medications such as Femara. For more information and further assistance, please call Customer Service at 1866.920.3784.

Dosage

The brand Purinethol and Mercaptopurine are available in the strength of 50 mg tablets only.

Usage

Purinethol (Mercaptopurine) is a prescription drug used as part of a combination chemotherapy maintenance regimen to treat acute lymphocytic leukemia, a type of cancer that begins in the white blood cells. The active ingredient in Purinethol is Mercaptopurine. Mercaptopurine belongs to the class of medications called purine antagonists (antineoplastic). It acts as an analog of naturally occurring purines hypoxanthine and guanine, thereby stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Purinethol are nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, fever, weakness, rash, diarrhea, cough, anorexia, dizziness, and hair loss (alopecia).

Stop using Purinethol and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Excessive passage of loose stool;
• Loss of appetite;
• Pale skin;
• Pain in the upper right part of the stomach;
• Severe generalized body weakness;
• Shortness of breath;
• Sore throat, fever, chills, or other signs of infection;
• Swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet;
• Unusual bruising or bleeding;
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes

Warnings and Interactions

Before starting this medication, it would be best to tell your doctor if you are allergic to Mercaptopurine, other drugs, or any of the ingredients in the Purinethol tablet. Purinethol is very similar to Azathioprine, and you should not use the two medications together to prevent systemic toxicity. Due to the nature of your condition, you tend to bleed easily. To lower the chance of getting cut, bruised, or injured, use caution with sharp objects like razors and nail cutters, and avoid activities such as contact sports. You should continue to take Mercaptopurine even if you feel well. Do not stop taking Mercaptopurine without talking to your doctor

Before you start using Purinethol, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• A history of agranulocytosis;
• Any other cancers apart from acute lymphocytic leukemia (such as lymphoma, skin or cervical cancer);
• kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Purinethol can harm the unborn baby. Therapy can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman. Pregnant women who receive Mercaptopurine have an increased incidence of miscarriage and stillbirth. Using birth control to avoid pregnancy during your treatment with Mercaptopurine would be best. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. You should consult your doctor before breastfeeding your child. There may be a drug interaction between Purinethol and other drugs such as febuxostat, rituximab, and tofacitinib.
