Tagamet (Cimetidine) is a prescription medication used to treat intestinal ulcers (including gastric and duodenal ulcers), prevent the recurrence of the ulcer, and treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus and causes heartburn. The active ingredient in Tagamet is Cimetidine. Cimetidine belongs to the class of medications called antihistamines (H2 antagonists). It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Decreasing excess stomach acid can help relieve symptoms such as stomach pain, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, cough, and trouble sleeping.

The common side effects of Tagamet are nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, or diarrhea.

Do not take more than your prescribed dosage. If you are also taking antacids to relieve stomach pain as recommended by your doctor, give a space of 2 hours before using your Cimetidine medicine. Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, Cimetidine should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Cimetidine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Tagamet and other drugs such as dofetilide, eliglustat, fezolinetant, lomitapide, and pimozide. Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight.
