Usage

Tykerb (Lapatinib) is a prescription medication used to treat a certain type of breast cancer (HER2-positive) in women who have already had chemotherapy and trastuzumab (Herceptin) as this combination has proven to give people more time before the cancer worsens. The active ingredient in Tykerb is Lapatinib. Lapatinib belongs to a class of medication called antineoplastics, anti-HER2. Tykerb works inside the cancer cell by interfering with certain proteins, called kinases, that can stimulate this uncontrolled growth. This mechanism of action slows and stops the growth of cancer cells.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Tykerb are mouth sores, diarrhea, loss of appetite, hair loss, abdominal pain, insomnia, nausea, and vomiting.

Stop using Tykerb and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Diarrhea that doesn't stop;
• Fast and irregular heartbeat;
• Symptoms suggestive of liver failure such as nausea that doesn't stop, abdominal pain, passage of dark urine, or yellowing eyes

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Lapatinib, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or have any other allergies. Tykerb is a tablet that should be used according to your doctor's prescription. You can take Tykerb indefinitely to keep the cancer under control, depending on your doctor's decision. Your doctor would only stop you from taking Tykerb if the cancer stopped responding to it or if you experienced any severe side effects. It would be best to know that diarrhea is a common side effect of this medication and may become severe. Tell your doctor immediately if diarrhea occurs or you have signs of dehydration, such as dizziness or decreased urination. Men and women of reproductive age should use an effective contraceptive while using chemotherapy drugs such as Tykerb. Talk to your doctor if your symptoms worsen despite regular use of Tykerb medicine.

Before you start using Tykerb, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding;
• Have heart problems including heart failure, slow heartbeat, or QT prolongation;
• Have a heart disease such as irregular heartbeat;
• Have kidney disease;
• Have liver cancer

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Lapatinib is not recommended for use by pregnant women. Lapatinib may harm an unborn baby. It is unknown if Lapatinib passes into breast milk. Because of the possible risk to the infant, breastfeeding is not recommended while using this medication and for one week after the last dose. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Tykerb and other drugs, such as flibanserin, lefamulin, lomitapide, lonafarnib, and pimozide.
