Product Details

Urso (Ursodiol – aka Ursodeoxycholic Acid) capsule is a prescription medication that is used to dissolve small gallstones if surgery is not an option for you. Ursodiol is a naturally occurring bile acid that helps your body dissolve gallstones. This medication is also used to prevent gallstones in individuals who experience rapid weight loss.

Ursodiol tablets are used for the treatment of primary biliary cirrhosis, an autoimmune disease that causes progressive destruction of the bile duct.

Side Effects

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (a rash on the body), swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects may include constipation, cough, dizziness, headache, rapid or pounding heartbeat and stomach. The serious side effects may include:
• Easy bleeding or bruising;
• Increased thirst or urination;
• Signs of infection;
• Swelling of the ankles or feet;
• Weakness

Precautions

You should not take Urso if you are allergic to Ursodiol or if you have any other allergies. There may be an interaction between Ursodiol and other medications such as antacids that contain aluminum, bezafibrate, cholestyramine, colestipol, cyclosporine, dapsone, estrogens, fenofibrate, gemfibrozil, nitrendipine, etc.

What does Ursodiol do for the liver?

Ursodiol for liver disease is prescribed for patients with certain types of liver condition which result in the retention of bile within the liver. These bile acids are toxic to cell membranes within the liver, which causes more damage and worsens the initial liver disease. Ursodiol for dogs or Urso for cats is used to reverse this vicious circle and protect the liver by binding with the toxic bile acids and reducing their concentration. How long does it take for Urso to work in cats?

Urso for cats works to protect the liver within a few hours of dosing. However, Ursodiol for liver disease is not a treatment in its own right, and the pet will need other treatments to correct the initial cause of the liver disease. Therefore, the response to treatment will be variable and depends upon the severity of the original condition and receiving appropriate, targeted treatment.
