The brand Zometa and its generic Zoledronic Acid are available in the strength of 4 mg/5 ml injection vial.

Zometa (Zoledronic Acid) is a prescription medication used to treat high calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia) caused by cancer and to treat weakened bones caused by cancer. Zoledronic acid is also used with cancer chemotherapy to treat bone problems that may occur with multiple myeloma and other types of cancer (such as breast, and lung) that have spread to the bones. The active substance in Zometa is Zoledronic acid. Zoledronic Acid belongs to the group of medications called Bisphosphonate Derivatives. It works by slowing down the release of calcium from bones which resulted in a reduction of calcium levels in the blood and slows down the breakdown of bone by cancer cells.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Zometa are bone pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite, dizziness, headache, and insomnia.

Stop using Zometa and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:

Your doctor may advise you to use reliable birth control while using receiving Zometa injections to prevent you from getting pregnant. If you become pregnant, talk to your doctor right away about the risks and benefits of this medication. It is unknown if Zoledronic Acid passes into breast milk. Because of its possible harmful effects on the breastfeeding baby, it would be best not to breastfeed a newborn while using Zometa medication. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
