Usage

Aciphex is a prescription medication that is used to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems such as gastroesophageal disease(GERD) and gastric ulcer. Rabeprazole belongs to a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). This medication works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Aciphex may also be given with an antibiotic to prevent gastric ulcer cause by Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) infection. Rabeprazole is not used for the immediate relief of heartburn symptoms.

Side Effects

The common Aciphex side effects include change in taste, diarrhea, headache, and upset stomach. Tell your doctor or get medical attention immediately if you experience the following serious side effects including:
• Irregular or fast or slow heartbeat;
• Persistent diarrhea or abdominal pain;
• Persistent muscle spasms, seizures;
• Serious allergic reaction such as skin rash, severe dizziness, trouble breathing;
• Worsening joint pain

Warnings and Interactions

You should not use Aciphex if you are allergic to Rabeprazole or to similar medications such as Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, and Protonix. Aciphex also interacts with HIV medications such as Edurant or Complera, please consult your doctor prior to initiate Aciphex. Before you start taking the medication, inform your doctor about your medical conditions especially if you have ever had:
• An autoimmune disorder such as lupus;
• Liver disease;
• Low levels of magnesium or vitamin B12 in your blood;
• Osteoporosis (bone loss)

Talk to your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, and herbal medications especially of anxiety/depression drugs, blood thinners, and seizures medications. Also tell them about any vitamins and supplements you take. Aciphex is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is unknown whether Rabeprazole passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use Aciphex without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. This medication shouldn’t be used in children younger than 12 years old without any medical advice. Do not chew, crush, or split the tablet.
