Usage

Akynzeo (Netupitant/Palonosetron) is a prescription medication used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy used in treating patients with cancer. The active ingredients in Akynzeo are Netupitant and Palonosetron. Netupitant is a substance P/Neurokinin 1 (NK1) antagonist and Palonosetron is a serotonin (5HT3) antagonist. They work by blocking natural substances in the body (such as the substance P/neurokinin 1, serotonin) that cause vomiting. Treating recurrent vomiting prevents dehydration and electrolyte derangement.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Akynzeo are headache, fatigue, constipation, and dyspepsia.

Stop using Akynzeo and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Severe headache that doesn’t go away;
• Loss of coordination;
• Severe dizziness or feeling light-headed;
• Severe stomach pain;
• Twitching of muscle;
• Unexplained agitation

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Akynzeo, tell your doctor if you are allergic to Netupitant, palonosetron, or other anti-nausea serotonin blockers (such as ondansetron), or if you have any other allergies. Akynzeo is a single dose given only on the day of chemotherapy treatment. It should be taken orally approximately an hour before beginning chemotherapy. Swallow the capsule whole and inform your doctor if you have trouble swallowing your capsule. The capsules may be taken with or without food. You should follow your prescription label carefully and not take in excess. Do not take Akynzeo in the days following chemotherapy unless you are receiving another chemotherapy cycle. Tell your doctor if you vomit or feel nauseated despite taking Akynzeo before your chemotherapy. Contact your doctor if you have a strange feeling or serious side effects after taking your medication.

Before you start using Akynzeo, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not take Akynzeo if you are pregnant or if you are a woman of childbearing potential not using contraception. Your doctor will discuss with you the risks and benefits of using Akynzeo. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Do not breastfeed if you are taking Akynzeo. It is not known whether Akynzeo passes into breast milk. There may be a drug interaction between Akynzeo and other drugs such as alprazolam, apomorphine, flibanserin, acetaminophen, and lonafarnib.
