Dosage

The brand Altace and the generic Ramipril is available in the strength of 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 15 mg capsules and tablets.

Usage

Altace (Ramipril) is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure. High blood pressure is when the force of blood pushing against the artery walls is consistently too high. This damages the arteries over time and can lead to serious complications like heart attack and stroke. Altace is also used to treat congestive heart failure. The drug is also used to lower the risk of death and hospitalizations in people whose heart is not pumping blood as well as it should after a heart attack. The active ingredient in Altace is Ramipril. Ramipril belongs to a class of drugs called called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It works by blocking the formation of angiotensin II, helping the blood vessels relax and improving blood flow.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Altace are cough, dizziness, headache, weakness, and tiredness.

Stop using Altace and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Fever;
• Lightheadedness;
• Little or no urination;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as wheezing, hives, itching, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Signs of high potassium, such as nausea, weakness, chest pain, irregular heartbeats

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Ramipril, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug or have any other allergies. Altace comes as a tablet and should be taken orally (by mouth) as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not crush the drug. Your blood pressure will need to be checked often while using this drug. Do not stop taking Altace even if you feel better. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. Stopping the drug suddenly can worsen your condition. Altace can make you dehydrated. Drink enough fluids, especially in hot weather, and when exercising to prevent dehydration. Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Do not use potassium supplements or salt substitutes unless your doctor has told you to.

Before you start using Altace, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are on a low-salt diet;

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Altace can cause injury or death to an unborn baby. Do not breastfeed when using Ramipril. It is unknown if this medicine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Altace and other drugs, such as benazepril, lithium, insulin, aspirin, aliskiren, sirolimus, etc. Do not take ramipril within 36 hours before or after taking medicine that contains sacubitril.
