Gemzar (Gematabine HCL) is a prescription medication used with either carboplatin or paclitaxel to treat different types of cancer including cancer of the biliary tract, breast, lung, ovarian, and pancreatic cancer. The active ingredient in Gemzar is Gematabine HCL. Gematabine hydrochloride belongs to the group of medications called antineoplastics, antimetabolites It works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Gemzar are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, temporary hair loss, constipation, injection site pain and mouth sores.

Your doctor will order certain lab tests before and during your treatment to check your body's response to gemcitabine. Discuss with your doctor if there is no changes in your symptoms or your condition worsen.

Before you start using Gemzar, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Lung diseases;
• Skin cancer;
• Undergone radiation therapy

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements.
