Usage

Nexplanon (Etonogestrel Implant) is a hormone-releasing birth control implant for women to help prevent pregnancy for up to three years. Etonogestrel is contained in a small plastic rod that is implanted into the skin of your upper arm. The medication is released slowly into the body. Nexplanon works by preventing ovulation. It also changes your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for the sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus.

The common side effects of Nexplanon may include acne, breast pain, breakthrough bleeding, changes in mood, changes in your menstrual periods, dizziness, flu-like symptoms, headache, menstrual cramps, nausea, pain where the implant is inserted, sore throat, stomach pain, vaginal itching or discharge, and weight gain.

Seek emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:

Smoking can greatly increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack. Do not use Nexplanon if you are pregnant. You may need to have a negative pregnancy test before getting the implant.
