Product Details

Plavix (Clopidogrel) is a RX medication that is used to prevent blood clots after a heart attack or stroke and in people with certain disorders of the heart or blood vessels. Clopidogrel works by keeping the platelets in your blood from clotting to prevent unwanted blood clots that can occur with certain heart or blood vessel conditions. This “anti-platelet” effect helps keep blood flowing smoothly in your body.

The common side effects may include diarrhea, dizziness, headache, heartburn, nausea and vomiting. The serious side effects may include:
• Chest pain;
• Signs of bleeding in the stomach;
• Signs of a serious allergic reaction

Do not take Plavix if you are allergic to Clopidogrel, or if you have any active bleeding such as a stomach ulcer or bleeding in the brain. Before you start taking this medication, inform your doctor about your medical conditions and about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. Plavix keeps your blood from clotting to prevent unwanted blood clots and because of this drug action, Plavix can make it easier for you to bleed, even from a minor injury. There are some medications that may interact with Plavix such as fluoxetine, ginseng, proton pump inhibitors (Esomeprazole, Omeprazole, Nexium, and Prilosec), sertraline, warfarin, etc. Plavix is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. It is unknown whether Clopidogrel passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not breast-feed while using Plavix.

Questions and Answers

1. What can I take with Plavix instead of Asprin for back pain?
Answer: The only other OTC medication you can take is Tylenol (Acetaminophen). Advil (Ibuprofen) has a drug interaction with Plavix (Clopidogrel).

2. What should I avoid while I am taking Plavix?
Answer: Plavix has anti-clotting properties and because of this, there are certain activities, medications and beverages that should be avoided while on this medication. Contact sports and other activities that knock the body around should be avoided to reduce the chances of cuts and bruises. Alcohol can cause the stomach and intestines to bleed and it should be taken in moderation if it can't be avoided entirely.
