Product Details

Visudyne (Verteporfin) is used along with laser light treatment to treat certain serious eye conditions such as macular degeneration, pathologic myopia, and ocular histoplasmosis. This medication is used to prevent decreased vision and blindness. Verteporfin belongs to the class of medications called photosensitizing agents. It works by causing clotting in the blood vessels of the eye, which decreases damage already done in the eye.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects may include blurred vision, feeling tired, headache, reaction at the injection site (pain, redness, irritation, and swelling). The serious side effects may include:
• Chest pain;
• Eye pain;
• Fainting;
• Sweating;
• Sudden change in vision

You should not use Visudyne if you are allergic to Verteporfin or if you have any other allergies. Before you start using this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical conditions and about all the medications you are taking including OTC and herbal medications. This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. You should avoid sun exposure; wear protective clothing and dark sunglasses when you go outdoors. This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. You should not breastfeed while using this medication because it passes into breast milk. There may be an interaction between Visudyne and other medications such as asprin, warfarin, calcium channel blockers, diltiazem, verapamil.
