Prevacid and Lansoprazole at CanadaPharmacyOnline

Prevacid (lansoprazole) is manufactured by BGP Pharma in many countries, including Canada.

Generic lansoprazole is available and is sourced from manufacturers that meet applicable regulatory standards. The specific manufacturer of your dispensed medication may vary.

Important Information about Generic Lansoprazole

Generic lansoprazole contains the same active ingredient as brand-name Prevacid and is required to meet the same safety, effectiveness, and quality standards. This means it's designed to work in the same way as Prevacid. Studies have demonstrated bioequivalence between generic and brand-name lansoprazole, meaning they have comparable absorption rates and overall effects. However, individual responses to any medication can vary. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about using generic lansoprazole.

For more information about generic drug approval and bioequivalence, please visit Access to Generic Drugs in Canada | Canada.ca.

Dosage

Prevacid and generic lansoprazole are commonly available in the strengths of 15 mg and 30 mg oral capsules.

Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your individual needs and medical conditions.

Usage

Lansoprazole is a prescription medication used to heal duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers, and erosive esophagitis. It's also used for the short-term treatment of heartburn and other symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), as well as for the long-term treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Additionally, it may be used in combination with antibiotics to eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with duodenal ulcer disease.

Mechanism of Action
Prevacid (lansoprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by irreversibly blocking the hydrogen-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+-ATPase) enzyme system, also known as the "proton pump," located in the parietal cells of the stomach. This inhibition of the proton pump prevents the final step in gastric acid production, thereby reducing stomach acid secretion. This reduction in acid helps to heal existing ulcers and erosions, relieve symptoms of acid reflux, and prevent further damage to the esophagus.

Use Prevacid exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change your dosage or stop taking the medication without first consulting your doctor, and follow the instructions in the patient information leaflet.

The information below summarizes some, but not all, potential side effects, risks, and interactions. Before taking Prevacid, it's essential to discuss all possible side effects, risks, and interactions with your doctor or pharmacist.

Side Effects

The information below is a partial list of side effects; individual reactions can vary. Before starting Prevacid, it's crucial to discuss potential side effects and risks with your doctor or pharmacist.

Common side effects – The following are examples of some common side effects of Prevacid; however, other side effects are possible. Contact your doctor promptly if any side effects are persistent, worsening, or concerning, or if you experience any other concerning symptoms.
• Abdominal pain
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Headache
• Nausea

Serious or rare side effects – Stop taking Prevacid and seek immediate medical attention right away if you experience any of the following symptoms:
• Allergic reactions (e.g., rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing)
• Bone fractures (especially with long-term use)
• Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever)
• Kidney problems (e.g., reduced urination, blood in urine, nausea, vomiting, swelling; may indicate acute interstitial nephritis)
• Low magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia) (e.g., muscle spasms, tremors, irregular heartbeat, seizures)
• Low vitamin B12 levels (with long-term use, e.g., unusual tiredness, weakness, tingling, numbness)
• Lupus erythematosus (e.g., new or worsening rash on nose and cheeks, joint pain)
• Severe skin reactions (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, with symptoms like severe rash, blistering, peeling skin, fever, flu-like symptoms)
• Stomach polyps (with long-term use, specifically fundic gland polyps)

Contraindications

This isn't an exhaustive list of contraindications. It's crucial to discuss all your medical conditions, past and present, and all medications you're taking with your doctor or pharmacist before starting Prevacid.

Prevacid shouldn't be used if:
• You're allergic to lansoprazole or any of its ingredients.
• You're taking rilpivirine-containing products.

Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, past and present, before starting Prevacid. This is crucial because certain conditions can affect whether Prevacid is right for you. These conditions may include, but aren't limited to:
• Undiagnosed stomach pain or unexplained weight loss (to rule out severe conditions like gastric malignancy)
• Liver disease
• Low magnesium levels
• Osteoporosis or history of bone fractures
• Clostridium difficile infection or risk factors for it
• Lupus
• Kidney impairment or risk factors for acute interstitial nephritis

Dizziness and Drowsiness
Prevacid isn't generally associated with significant dizziness or drowsiness. However, if you experience these effects, avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you understand how it affects you.

Drug Interactions

Before taking Prevacid, it's essential to discuss all potential risks and interactions with your doctor or pharmacist. For complete and up-to-date information, refer to the product monograph from Canada: https://pdf.hres.ca/dpd_pm/00044663.PDF

Provide your doctor with a complete list of all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Prevacid can interact with several medications, including (but not limited to):
• Ampicillin esters (e.g., bacampicillin)
• Antivirals (e.g., atazanavir, nelfinavir, rilpivirine): Lansoprazole can significantly reduce the absorption and effectiveness of these medications. (Note: Rilpivirine is a contraindication.)
• Blood thinners (e.g., warfarin): Increased risk of bleeding.
• Calcium salts (e.g., calcium carbonate) may reduce calcium absorption with long-term use.
• Citalopram
• Clopidogrel: This may reduce the effectiveness of clopidogrel.
• Digoxin: May increase digoxin levels.
• Diuretics (certain types, especially thiazide and loop diuretics) may increase the risk of hypomagnesemia.
• Drugs requiring an acidic stomach for absorption (e.g., certain antifungals like ketoconazole, itraconazole, and certain tyrosine kinase inhibitors): Lansoprazole may reduce the absorption of these drugs.
• Iron salts: This may reduce the absorption of iron.
• Methotrexate: This may increase methotrexate levels and toxicity.
• Mycophenolate mofetil: This may reduce the effectiveness of mycophenolate mofetil.
• Sucralfate: This may delay the absorption of lansoprazole; take lansoprazole at least 30 minutes before sucralfate.
• Tacrolimus: May increase tacrolimus levels.
• Theophylline: May increase theophylline levels.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Tell your doctor if you're pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Prevacid should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Lansoprazole is excreted in breast milk and may harm a nursing infant. Women who are breastfeeding should discuss the risks and benefits with their doctor.

Use in Older Adults

No overall differences in safety or effectiveness have been observed between elderly and younger patients. However, due to the increased prevalence of concomitant diseases and other drug therapies in elderly patients, caution should be exercised.

Frequently Asked Questions about Prevacid at Canada Pharmacy Online

Why is Prevacid more affordable in Canada than in the United States?

Prescription drug prices, including Prevacid, are generally lower in Canada than in the US due to a combination of factors, primarily government price regulations, differing market dynamics, and other economic considerations. In Canada, provincial and federal governments negotiate drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, which often results in lower costs compared to the US, where market forces play a more significant role. For more information, see the FAQs on Prescription Drug Importation from the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF): https://www.kff.org/health-costs/issue-brief/faqs-on-prescription-drug-importation/

Can I take Prevacid with food?

Prevacid delayed-release capsules should generally be taken before eating. Follow your doctor’s specific instructions regarding whether to take it with or without food, as this can vary depending on the formulation and the condition being treated.

Will Prevacid cure my acid reflux?

Prevacid helps reduce stomach acid and manage the symptoms of acid reflux and related conditions. It's not a cure; long-term treatment may be necessary for some conditions.

How quickly does Prevacid start working?

Some symptoms may be relieved within a few days of starting Prevacid. However, full therapeutic effects for healing ulcers or erosions may take several weeks of consistent use.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Prevacid?

If you miss a dose of Prevacid, take it as soon as you remember unless it's almost time for your next dose. If it's close to your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Don't take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
