Combivir Information

Drug name: Combivir
Generic name: Zidovudine/Lamivudine, Duovir
Use: Human Immundeficiency Virus (HIV)

Combivir is a medication which is used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus, better known as HIV. HIV is associated with causing AIDS, whereby the immune system shuts down over time. Zidovudine and lamivudine are the two active ingredients in Combivir, both of which are reverse transcriptase inhibitors and work by preventing the reproduction of HIV in the blood. Although Combivir works to slow down HIV, it does not cure it.

Combivir Side Effects

The possible Combivir side effects include:
• Changes in shape or location of body fat;
• Cough, runny nose;
• Diarrhea;
• Difficulty breathing, dizziness, fatigue, weakness;
• Insomnia, headaches;
• Muscle pain or weakness;
• Numb or cold feeling in the limbs;
• Slow or uneven heartbeat;
• Stomach pain, nausea with vomiting;

More serious side effects may include:
• Difficulty swallowing, difficulty standing or climbing stairs;
• Fever, body aches, chills;
• Liver problems;
• Pale skin, easy bruising;
• Pancreatitis;
• White patches or sores in or around the mouth.

Combivir Safety in Pregnancy and Children

• Have liver problems or Hepatitis B;

Combivir is pregnancy category C (studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus). You must discuss the risks and benefits of using Combivir if you are pregnant or breastfeeding with your doctor. Combivir is safe for use in adults only and should not be given to children unless specifically recommended by your doctor.
