Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate contains 2 medicines, emtricitabine – a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, or tenofovir DF – a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor. When using for PrEP, Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate should always be used in combination with safer sex practices, such as using condoms. Just like other HIV medications, Emtricitabine/Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate does not cure HIV, but this medication works by slowing the spread of HIV, in turn, it may lower the risk of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), serious infections or cancer.

This medication should be taken by mouth, usually once daily as directed by your doctor. It is very important to keep taking this medication and other HIV medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor, and do not skip any doses. Do not take more or less or stop taking this medication – not taking this medication will cause the viral load to increase, then this will make the infection more difficult to treat.
