Tivicay (Dolutegravir sodium) is a prescription medication used to control the multiplication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the body. The drug reduces the viral load in the body to improve the immune system. HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system and can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) if untreated. Tivicay increases the CD4 cell count in the blood. CD4 cells are white blood cells that fight infection in the body. The active ingredient in Tivicay is Dolutegravir sodium. Dolutegravir sodium belongs to a class of medications called integrase inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood and increasing the number of cells that fight infections in the body. Tivicay does not cure HIV or AIDS. This drug is always used in combination with other anti-retroviral medicines.

The common side effects of Tivicay are headache, nausea, diarrhea, tiredness, or insomnia.

Stop using Tivicay and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:

• Been on dofetilide (tikosyn);
• Kidney problem;
• Liver disease, especially hepatitis B or C;
• Tuberculosis

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not use Tivicay in the first trimester. The drug can harm the unborn baby. You should be on an approved contraceptive while taking Tivicay to avoid getting pregnant. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. HIV may be passed through breast milk to a baby even if the baby is born without HIV. There may be a drug interaction between Tivicay and other drugs such as antacids or laxatives, calcium vitamins, metformin, orlistat, imatinib, phenytoin, ritonavir, etc. avoid drugs such as apalutamide, calcium citrate, St. John's wort, or rifampin with Tivicay.
