Usage

Tums (Calcium Carbonate) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat symptoms of excess stomach acid, such as heartburn, indigestion, and upset stomach. Excess stomach acid, also known as hyperacidity, can be caused by factors like consuming certain foods and drinks (coffee, alcohol, spicy foods), being overweight, smoking, stress, pregnancy, and certain medications. Tums may also be used to prevent or treat calcium deficiency. The active ingredient in Tums is Calcium Carbonate. Calcium Carbonate belongs to a class of drugs called antacids. It works by lowering the amount of acid in the stomach.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Tums are burping, constipation, and gas.

Stop using Tums and contact your doctor immediately if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Appetite loss;
• Increased thirst or urination;
• Mental or mood changes;
• Muscle pain;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as wheezing, hives, itching, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Unusual tiredness;
• Unusual weight loss

Warnings and Interactions

Tums comes as a chewable and should be taken orally (by mouth) as directed by your doctor. Chew the tablet well before swallowing it with a full glass of water. Do not swallow the tablet whole. Allow one to two hours between taking Tums and other medicines. Do not drink alcohol when using this drug. Alcohol may worsen your heartburn.

• Become pregnant or nursing a child;
• Have hypercalcemia;
• Have intestinal blockage;
• Have kidney disease

Inform your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is unknown if Tums will harm your unborn baby. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this drug in pregnancy with your doctor. Your dosage may be different in pregnancy. Do not breastfeed when using Calcium Carbonate. This medicine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Tums and other drugs, such as doxycycline, levothyroxine, potassium phosphate, digoxin, ciprofloxacin, etc.
