Videx (Didanosine) is an anti-viral medication, which can prevent the spread of harmful HIV cells to other parts of the human body. Didanosine belongs to the class of drugs called reverse transcriptase inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the blood. It is commonly prescribed to help with the treatment of HIV; however, it should be noted that this medication is not a cure for either HIV or AIDS.

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, rash, headache and changes in the shape or location of body fat, especially in your arms, legs, face, neck, breasts, and waist.

Stop using Videx and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds;
• Numbness, tingling, or pain in your hands or feet;
Signs of problems with the liver or pancreas;
• Vision changes

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficult breathing or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Warnings and Interactions

You should not take Videx if you are allergic to Didanosine or any other ingredients of this medicine. Do not take Videx together with allopurinol, ribavirin, or stavudine.

Before you start using Videx, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• If you drink large amounts of alcohol;
• Kidney disease or if you are on dialysis;
• Liver disease or pancreatitis;
• Numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, including Raynaud's syndrome

If you are pregnant or think you’re pregnant, do not take Videx together with stavudine. This combination can be very dangerous during pregnancy. Women with HIV or AIDS should not breastfeed a baby. Do not drink alcohol. It may increase your risk of liver damage or pancreatitis. Using Videx will not prevent your disease from spreading. Do not have unprotected sex or share razors or toothbrushes. Talk with your doctor about safe ways to prevent HIV transmission during sex. Sharing drug or medicine needles is never safe, even for a healthy person.

Videx can also cause severe or life-threatening effects on your liver or pancreas. Call your doctor at once if you have: severe pain in your upper stomach, nausea and vomiting, fast heart rate, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice. Certain HIV medications or antibiotics should not be taken at the same time as Videx, such as Ciprofloxacin, Delavirdine or Indinavir, Nelfinavir and Itraconazole or Ketoconazole. Confirm with your doctor the best daily timing of all your current medicines. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Videx is for adults and children at least 2 weeks old.
